Home Schooling In The High School Years

Parents who have been successfully home schooling their children from the beginning of their formal education sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to working with their high school students as well. The great news is that if you have already built a working relationship with your teens, it should carry over into home schooling efforts during their high school years as well. Those things that have worked so well for you up to this time should continue to work for you now, and your high school students should be able to take more of the responsibility now that they are nearly grown.

This is the secret to being successful with your home schooling techniques. Just keep doing what you have found to be successful in the past. If you have been using curriculum that was based on literature and that has worked fine for your family, just keep up the good work. They will continue to learn that way now that they are older. On the other hand, if you have been using the philosophy of unschooling and it has worked well, keep doing that. Your kids have already mastered the techniques you have been using and they are ready to absorb more in the very same way.

That is after all the built-in beauty ofhome school anyway. You and your family have so many choices to make learning more exciting. You may want to allow your students to choose between books or a video tutor when they are learning subjects like math. The thing is to search for workable solutions, but when you find that what you have selected don’t feel stuck with it change it to something that will.

The most important thing to remember when you are home schooling teenagers is that you still have to see some progress from one year to the next. One thing to watch out for, especially for those students who do not do well in math is the fear of the next step in the process of completing their education. If they have completed Algebra 1 for instance, and are afraid to go on to Algebra 2 or Geometry, you should not allow them to neglect it while Algebra 1 is still fresh in their minds.
