In today’s world, America’s children have many more options for receiving an education than was possible in the past. Through the use of the Internet, families have access to a wide array of resources which were not available just a short few years ago. Some families choose home schooling for their students while others opt for going the route of traditional schools. Others select from the many private schools that are available at an expense that may be out of reach for their peers. Still others use a combination of virtual school along with the traditional settings of brick-and-mortal institutions.
The decision about how and where to receive the best education is left up to those parents who can manage to manipulate their lifestyles in an effort to take advantage of these types of choices. Many parents have decided to allow their children to
remain in the public school system because they do not have the resources or time to spend educating them on a home school basis. Home schooling curriculums offer greater versatility, and allow children to study at their own pace, but this is not for everyone. Parents must be committed to the process and possess some basic knowledge of how to go about instructing in a variety of subjects.
Many home school programs offer virtual, or e-schooling opportunities where parents and their students can make selections from numerous subjects to meet the specific needs of each child, and in many instances, this same option is available when virtual schools are used in combination with traditional schooling as well. Some school systems today even offer this option for students who are at an appropriate age, while others, like those in Florida are given mandates from the state government that children must take at least one online course before graduating from high school.
Home schooling options are an excellent way to receive an education, but so is the option to use virtual schools in conjunction with traditional schooling to meet requirements for earning a high school diploma. When choosing to home school, parents have complete control over what their children are going to study, and they must be wise in their selections so as to provide them with the requirements for entering college or university if that is in their plans.
On the other hand, students who attend schools that offer a combination of traditional school attendance with some class requirements being satisfied through virtual schools have another level of flexibility that many students miss out on. It is this flexibility that many parents and students yearn for as they juggle lifestyles with the needs of their students. Similar to home schooling, students using virtual schools to meet curriculum requirements have access to one-on-one attention from teachers who are there any time of day. That means that students can study at their own pace and move on when they are comfortable that they have mastered the information presented.
This type of flexibility is shared by both home school and virtual schools classes, but when Internet classes are combined with traditional studies, the school administration of the district the child is attending has the final say as to what courses must be completed. This is unlike the curriculum used in home schooling where parents and students can decide what subjects to study.
In a world where greater options exist, parents and their students are better prepared to take on the challenges of learning.
